American anthropologist Edward T.Hall distingui— shes cultures on the basis of their way of communicating along a dimension from high—context to low—context. In high—context cultures like native America,Latin America, Japan,China and Korea, meanings are not necessarily con— tained in words. If you want to interpret the meaning of a sentence, you should not only focus on the words them— selves, but also read between the lines and decode the non— verbal communication. For low—context cultures like Ger— many,Switzerland and America, verbal messages contain most of the information and very little is embedded in the context and the speakers. The former tends to be indirect and implicit whereas the latter tends to be direct and ex—plicit.
For the foreign language learners, success in develo— ping intercultural rapport is directly related to the ability to understand others' culturally influenced verbal commu— nication styles. It is often valuable to talk about cultural differences in communication styles before they result in serious misunderstandings.
